Although children don’t have the responsibility of a family on their shoulders, a high profile job to go to or many various relationships to maintain, problems at home or school can certainly cause children stress. Unfortunately, it is often hard for adults to recognize it as stress, and sometimes the child appears to be acting up.
How do children display anxiety? Some of the symptoms seen in childhood stress are crying, running away, aggressive behavior, self comforting such as rocking, headache, stomachache, sleep problems and toileting accidents, among others. Of course any time your child has an upset stomach or wets their pants it doesn’t mean that they are stressed, but it is possible that those things in combination with other symptoms may indicate that the child is experiencing stress for some reason or other.
Kids cannot deal with stress on their own. When children are stressed it is up to the parents or other adults in their lives to help them through it. Although it is not true that all stress is bad for children, it is still important for the causes of stress to be examined and adjustments made to diminish the stress.
Believe it or not, stress can be beneficial to children. They can learn a lot by experiencing less than comfortable or happy situations in their lives. Learning to deal with these stressful situations is a very important life skill that they can use in the future.
That is not the rule. On the other hand, some types of stress are too much for children. They can have long term and lasting effects. If stress levels get too high a child may experience attacks. For children panic attack can be even more traumatic than for adults. Helping them through these difficulties in an understanding and calm way is very important.
It is normal for parents and teachers to be concerned about children who display symptoms of stress. If you have children and you are worried about the levels of stress in their lives or have noticed certain strange and unexplained behaviors such as nervous repetitive activities, aggressive or defensive behavior or constant stomachache, ask yourself what might be causing stress in the child’s life.
Children do not cope with stress like adults. Remember that what might seem like a minor problem or no problem at all to you may be very difficult for your child to deal with. Overly high expectations at home or school, being teased by other children, seeing parents’ strained relationship might all be causes of stress. See what you can do to lessen the strain and help the child cope in a healthy way.
